REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURAL PRACTICES FOR IMPROVED LIVELIHOODS AND MARKETS (REALSM). “REALMS PROJECT” Implemented in NYABIHU AND NGORORERO DISTRICTS

Through the partnership of SNV-Rwanda, Rwanda development organization-RDO is implementing Regenerative Agricultural practices for improved Livelihoods and Markets (REALMS) Project in Nyabihu and Ngororero districts of Western Province of Rwanda. This is a 4-year project whose goal is to improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in Western Kenya and Western Rwanda through creating conditions for the successful adoption of regenerative agricultural practices. The project started its preliminary activities in August 2021

The expected project outcomes include: a) Adoption of regenerative agricultural practices by smallholder farmers, b) Increased investment, business growth and revenues for local service providers of products and services supporting regenerative agriculture.  c) Improved enabling environment, favorable to market driven regenerative agriculture. 

Achievements so far.

Outcome : Increased adoption of regenerative practices by smallholder farmers.

Activities under this outcome focus on working with small holder farmers to promote and support Regenerative Agricultural practices that include among others; increasing access to knowledge, skills, inputs, technology and training. Within this period, the following have been accomplished.

Training to public extension services, local community organizations and private or NGO extension.

 REALMS enabled training of 15(12 males and 3 females) public extensionists including district agriculture unit staff, and cooperatives representatives on regenerative and circular agriculture in Ngororero district. Topics delivered included; Regenerative agriculture “what is and why RA”, Conventional farming, RA concept and principles and the linkages between RA, soil health, integrated soil fertility management, integrated pest management and crops/ tress and livestock.  practical training on Training of Trainers demo plots to showcase various regenerative agricultural practices to participants.
