Musanze residents celebrate Farmers' Day

Residents of Muko Sector in Musanze District on Tuesday were joined by officials from the district, RDO and other stakeholders to celebrate farmers' day at the district level in an event held at IABBIZMU union of cooperatives.

Officiating at the ceremony, Andrew Mpuhwe Rucyahana, the Vice-Mayor in charge of Economic Development congratulated farmers in Muko for this special day where they celebrate their significant role of feeding the world. He applauded farmers for their unity and working together with partners like RDO, which has led to many benefits like increasing productivity and ensuring steady markets.

 “We appreciate the role of RDO in supporting farmers through trainings, agricultural expertise and other related support in different ways. RDO did not come here to work alone but also brought along other equally beneficial partners,” the Vice Mayor said. RDO (Rwanda Development Organisation) initiated Farmers' Day to recognize the importance and significant role played by farmers. Different activities have been organized in advance for the national event which will to be celebrated on 14th July in Kayonza District. The event at Musanze attracted farmers from different cooperatives, RDO, partners like Bralirwa, local government officials, the Executive Secretary of Muko Sector, Director of agriculture and Natural Resources Officer, District Agronomist among others.

Peter Badege, who represented the head of RDO at the event in Musanze said that the role played by farmers deserve praise because they work hard to feed people in the country and beyond. The day was marked with celebratory and patriotic songs with farmers dancing to the beats while displaying their produce. Intore Tuyisenge, a local popular singer known for writing songs promoting unity and reconciliation in Rwanda graced the event where farmers danced in a celebratory mood.

Members of ABAJYANA NIGIHE Cooperative from Kabere Village in Muko Sector entertained the gathering with drama and plays that promote the farming profession. The plays highlighted the contributions of farmers and their economic impact to the country. The celebrations of Farmers' Day in Musanze is part of the build-up activities at the district level that are preparing the final day on the national level that will be held in Kayonza on 14th July 2023. While thanking farmers is one way to celebrate the day, through a mini exhibition the day will feature best agricultural practices and explore farmers’ challenges and solutions in the country. The Farmers Day was organized by RDO in collaboration with different partners including WFP Africa Improved Foods (AIF) Bralirwa and Bank of Kigali.
